Formlessness

My final prompt for Spatial Dynamics Spring 2020 taught by Ken Horri in Experimental Foundations Studies in my freshman year. Formlessness in Kitchen Utensils informed by Industrial Design, my first crack at thinking like an industrial designer and learning CAD. Here is my unrefined thought process and my process of learning CAD software!

Summary of notes from above:

Form follows function. How do we create something that is formless by this definition? Making something with multiple functions. Visually, it has no clear definition or function. Ideas included counter-intuitive and counter-productive designs, but ended with multi-function designs.

Looking at Swiss Army knives as an example of a “formless” product.

Different ideas of how to combine tools together focusing on the joinery systems.

Looking at camping utensils as examples of multi-functional objects.

Finalized design:

Generalized collapsable handle with interchangeable heads that change the function of the object joined with a dovetail joint.

CAD model. Rendering is still very much a work in progress.

The End :-)
